Garden Bed Edging
Edging?
In a recent social media post, we quoted Francis Atterbury who said “It’s attention to detail that makes the difference between average and stunning. This is the case with many aspects of life, and among them is landscaping. Edging is one of the mentioned details that will take your property to the next level. Edging is the act of dividing grass areas from garden beds, hardscapes or other significant areas. While not a requirement for a healthy lawn, it helps ease lawn care and creates a known divide between your garden beds and your lawn.
How to Edge?
Edging is a straight-forward process, but the steps can be slightly different depending on a few variables. The first true variable is whether you are edging a new garden bed, or one that has been edged before. If it has never been edged before, you get the opportunity to be creative and design how your garden bed will look. Remember that curves are beautiful, so try to keep the garden bed curved as opposed to straight. Your tool choice should either be a spade or an edger; either one will work admirably and get the job done. Focus on edging at a 90 degree angle and going 4-5 inches deep, as this will allow room for the mulch. Once you add mulch, it should not be flush with the grass as there should still be 1-2″ of height difference.
Why Edge?
Edging is an interesting part of landscaping, as it’s benefits aren’t always obvious. However, even though the benefits are not readily apparent, it makes a huge difference to your property. First, edging creates distinct areas between your garden beds and the lawn. This distinction helps keep people out of your gardened area and helps you plan your garden to emphasize the curves and looks. Second, by dividing your garden from the lawn, you help contain whats in the garden. This is especially true for mulch, as it tends to wash out during hard rains, so by edging, you ensure the ease of finding and re-spreading the mulch. Finally there’s the maintenance aspect of your yard. By providing a distinct divide between the areas of your yard, you make it easier to mow and trim as you can easily tell where the cutoff is.
Edging is a quick and easy way to improve the beauty of your landscaping. You can choose to have the divide just be a sharp distinction between lawn and garden bed, or you can choose to add a material to improve further. An edge created by bricks or concrete pavers can create a stunning and well-defined view. The addition of these materials isn’t necessary, but can take your landscape to the next level.
